-sima- (affix)

THE AFFIXES -SIMA- & -LIQ-

This affix -sima- is used to describe the state that one finds oneself after a certain action has been completed.  To better understand its meaning, we can compare it with the affix –liq- which indicates that a certain action is happening right now.  Compare the following examples:

 angirraqtuq  She goes home.
angirraliqtuq  She is going home right now.
 angirraqsimajuq  She is at home.

When -liq- is added to a root ending in a consonant, it deletes the final consonant:

aullaq + tuq =  aullaqtuq He departs.
aullaq + liq + tuq =  aullaliqtuq He is departing right now.

-sima- is an easy affix to work with.  It can be added to any root without changing its spelling:

aullaq + sima + juq =   aullaqsimajuq  He has departed; She is away.
As seen above, -sima- is frequently used with verbs involving motion:

 Maanna Qikiqtarjuarmi piqatiga takujaqtuqsimajara.
Right now I am in Qikiqtarjuaq visiting my friend.

The literal translation would be:

I am currently in Qikiqtarjuaq, having gone to visit my friend.
You will also see -sima- used to make nouns that are built around a verb:

 sanajuq  She makes/manufactures something.
 Kanatami  in Canada
Kanatami  sanasimajut  objects that have been made in Canada.

 tammaqtuq   He makes a mistake.
tammaqsimajuq   an error; mistake (that has been made)
