-sima- (affix)
THE AFFIXES -SIMA- & -LIQ-
This affix -sima- is used to describe the state that one finds oneself after a certain action has been completed. To better understand its meaning, we can compare it with the affix –liq- which indicates that a certain action is happening right now. Compare the following examples:
| angirraqtuq | She goes home. |
| angirraliqtuq | She is going home right now. |
| angirraqsimajuq | She is at home. |
When -liq- is added to a root ending in a consonant, it deletes the final consonant:
| aullaq + tuq = | aullaqtuq | He departs. |
| aullaq + liq + tuq = | aullaliqtuq | He is departing right now. |
-sima- is an easy affix to work with. It can be added to any root without changing its spelling:
| aullaq + sima + juq = | aullaqsimajuq | He has departed; She is away. |
As seen above, -sima- is frequently used with verbs involving motion:
| Maanna Qikiqtarjuarmi piqatiga takujaqtuqsimajara. |
| Right now I am in Qikiqtarjuaq visiting my friend. |
The literal translation would be:
| I am currently in Qikiqtarjuaq, having gone to visit my friend. |
You will also see -sima- used to make nouns that are built around a verb:
| sanajuq | She makes/manufactures something. |
| Kanatami | in Canada |
| Kanatami sanasimajut | objects that have been made in Canada. |
| tammaqtuq | He makes a mistake. |
| tammaqsimajuq | an error; mistake (that has been made) |
