-ut (affix)

-UT, -JJUT, -RUT

These three affixes have the same meaning. Picking which one to use will depend on the root to which the affix will be added.

If the last syllable of the root has one vowel, delete the last consonant and add -ut
If the last syllable of the root has two vowels, delete the final consonant and add -jjut
If the last syllable of the root ends in Q, the Q changes to R before adding -ut

When this affix appears at the end of a word, it is used to express the idea of “an instrument used to…”

kaapliuqtunga I make coffee.
kaapiliurut a coffee maker

uqaala- to call
uqaalajunga I call.
uqaalaut a telephone

ilisai- to study
ilisaijunga I study
ilisaijjut a lesson

titiraq- to write
titiraqtunga I write
titiraut a pen / pencil

If any endings are added to a noun that ends in -ut, -jjut, or -rut, an i is added to make pronunciation easier:

kaapiliurut + taqaq + qa = kappiliurutitaqaqqa Is there a coffee maker?
titiraut + qaq + qit = titirautiqaqqit Do you have a pencil?
