-ut (affix)
-UT, -JJUT, -RUT
These three affixes have the same meaning. Picking which one to use will depend on the root to which the affix will be added.
| If the last syllable of the root has one vowel, delete the last consonant and add -ut |
| If the last syllable of the root has two vowels, delete the final consonant and add -jjut |
| If the last syllable of the root ends in Q, the Q changes to R before adding -ut |
When this affix appears at the end of a word, it is used to express the idea of “an instrument used to…”
| kaapliuqtunga | I make coffee. |
| kaapiliurut | a coffee maker |
| uqaala- | to call |
| uqaalajunga | I call. |
| uqaalaut | a telephone |
| ilisai- | to study |
| ilisaijunga | I study |
| ilisaijjut | a lesson |
| titiraq- | to write |
| titiraqtunga | I write |
| titiraut | a pen / pencil |
If any endings are added to a noun that ends in -ut, -jjut, or -rut, an i is added to make pronunciation easier:
| kaapiliurut + taqaq + qa = | kappiliurutitaqaqqa | Is there a coffee maker? |
| titiraut + qaq + qit = | titirautiqaqqit | Do you have a pencil? |
